When homeowners start thinking about upgrading their outdoor spaces, one of the first questions they ask is: Which improvements actually add value to my home? While curb appeal is important, today’s buyers (and homeowners) are looking for outdoor spaces that function as true extensions of the home.
The right outdoor features don’t just boost resale value—they increase everyday enjoyment, improve functionality, and create memorable spaces for gathering, relaxing, and entertaining. Below, we break down the outdoor features that consistently add the most value and explain why thoughtful design matters just as much as the features themselves.
Full Outdoor Living Spaces: The Biggest Value Driver
Outdoor living spaces offer some of the highest returns because they effectively add usable square footage without the cost of a home addition. A well-designed outdoor living area feels intentional, comfortable, and connected to the home.
These spaces often include:
Defined areas for dining, lounging, and entertaining
Integrated landscaping and hardscaping
Smooth transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces
Rather than adding individual features over time, a professionally planned outdoor living space brings everything together into one cohesive design—making the space more functional and visually appealing- and Outdoor Innovations offers 3-D design services that can help you envision your space!
Patios, walkways, and custom stonework form the backbone of many outdoor upgrades. These features improve how homeowners move through their property while dramatically enhancing curb appeal.
High-value elements include:
Custom stone patios designed for durability and style
Walkways that guide traffic and connect outdoor areas
Driveways that elevate first impressions
Quality materials and expert installation ensure these features hold up over time, making them a long-term investment rather than a short-term upgrade.
Outdoor Kitchens & Built-In Appliances: High Buyer Appeal
Outdoor kitchens continue to be one of the most sought-after backyard features. They transform outdoor spaces into entertainment hubs and encourage homeowners to spend more time outside.
Popular outdoor kitchen elements include:
Built-in grills and cooking appliances
Prep and serving counter space
Refrigeration and storage
Trash receptacles
When integrated into a larger outdoor living design, outdoor kitchens add convenience, luxury, and strong resale appeal.
Fire Features: Extending Outdoor Use
Fire features add both function and ambiance, allowing homeowners to enjoy their outdoor spaces well into spring and fall. They also create natural gathering spots that enhance the overall experience of the yard.
Examples include:
Fire pits for casual seating areas
Outdoor fireplaces as focal points
Built-in seating surrounding fire features
Fire features bring warmth, visual interest, and emotional appeal—qualities that resonate strongly with future buyers.
Adding overhead structures helps define outdoor rooms and improves comfort during hot or unpredictable weather. These features make outdoor spaces more usable throughout the day and across seasons.
Key options include:
Pergolas for partial shade and architectural interest
Pavilions for full coverage and protection
Gazebos for enclosed or semi-enclosed gathering spaces
Each option offers a different balance of shade, structure, and style, allowing homeowners to tailor their outdoor environment to their needs.
Outdoor Lighting: Small Upgrade, Big Impact
Outdoor lighting is one of the most cost-effective ways to add value. It improves safety, highlights landscape features, and dramatically enhances nighttime curb appeal.
Effective outdoor lighting often includes:
Path and walkway lighting
Accent lighting for landscaping and stone features
Ambient lighting for outdoor living areas
Thoughtful lighting design ensures outdoor spaces are just as inviting after dark as they are during the day.
Water Features: Luxury and Tranquility
Custom Water Feature
Water features elevate outdoor spaces by adding sound, movement, and a sense of calm. They create a retreat-like atmosphere that enhances both enjoyment and perceived value.
Examples include:
Waterfalls
Fountains
Reflecting or pond-style features
Custom water features
When incorporated into a broader landscape design, water features can turn an ordinary yard into a peaceful escape.
Poolscaping: Creating a Resort-Style Experience
A pool alone is a feature—but poolscaping is what creates lasting value. The surrounding landscape, hardscaping, and layout determine how functional and appealing the pool area truly is.
High-value poolscaping focuses on:
Flow between the pool and other outdoor spaces
Safety and accessibility
Visual cohesion with the rest of the landscape
Well-designed poolscapes feel intentional and luxurious, similar to a private resort.
The Bottom Line: Design Creates the Most Value
The outdoor features that increase value are those that are thoughtfully planned and professionally designed. Cohesion, functionality, and long-term durability matter just as much as individual upgrades.
Whether you’re considering a single enhancement or a complete backyard transformation, starting with a comprehensive design ensures your investment delivers both immediate enjoyment and lasting value.
Planning ahead—especially before the busy spring season—allows homeowners to make informed decisions and secure their spot on the project calendar. Contact Outdoor Innovations today to discuss how we can help create the design you want for your home!
Custom Stone Pavers for Beautiful Walkways and Patios
A well-designed walkway does more than lead guests to your front door. It helps define your landscape, complements your home’s architecture, and creates the first impression of your outdoor space. Custom stone pavers make it possible to turn that functional pathway into an important part of the overall landscape design.
At Outdoor Innovations, we design and install custom paver walkways, patios, and outdoor living spaces throughout the Quad Cities and surrounding areas of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. By selecting the right paver style, pattern, colors, borders, and layout, we can create hardscapes that feel like a natural extension of the home.
The custom walkway featured in this project is a great example. Instead of using a simple straight path, the design incorporates a sweeping curve, contrasting border, and textured pavers to create an entrance that feels welcoming, established, and unique to the property.
What Makes a Stone Paver Walkway Custom?
Choosing the paver itself is only one part of designing a custom walkway.
The shape of the path, width, laying pattern, border, color combinations, transitions, and relationship to the surrounding landscaping all contribute to the finished design. These details give homeowners considerably more flexibility than a basic poured concrete walkway.
A custom design can incorporate:
Curved or straight walkway layouts
Contrasting paver borders
Multiple paver sizes and patterns
Natural or manufactured stone
Complementary colors and textures
Steps and elevation changes
Landscape beds along the walkway
Connections to patios and other outdoor living areas
The goal isn’t simply to install pavers. It’s to design a walkway that looks like it belongs with the home and the rest of the property.
Choosing the Right Pavers for Your Landscape
There isn’t one paver that works for every home. Material selection should take into account the home’s architecture, existing landscape, desired style, maintenance expectations, and how the space will be used.
Tumbled and weathered-edge pavers can create an established, natural appearance that works especially well with traditional homes and landscapes. Cleaner edges and more uniform shapes can produce a more contemporary look.
Color is equally important. Rather than selecting a paver in isolation, we look at colors already present in the home’s exterior, including brick, stone, siding, roofing, and other hardscape elements.
Borders provide another opportunity to customize the design. A contrasting border, like the one used in this walkway, can define the edge of the path and add visual interest without overwhelming the space.
Why Use Pavers for Walkways and Patios?
Quality pavers combine appearance with practical benefits, making them a popular material for both walkways and outdoor living areas.
Durability
A properly designed and installed paver surface can handle years of foot traffic and exposure to changing Midwest weather conditions.
Design Flexibility
Pavers are available in numerous sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. They can be arranged in different patterns and combined with borders and accent materials to create a distinctive design.
Easier Individual Repairs
Unlike one continuous concrete slab, a paver surface consists of individual units. If repairs or access beneath the surface are ever necessary, individual pavers can often be removed and replaced without rebuilding the entire walkway.
Curb Appeal
Walkways are among the first landscape features visitors notice. A thoughtfully designed paver walkway can create a more polished transition between the driveway, landscape, and front entrance.
Designing Pavers for Midwest Conditions
Appearance matters, but a successful paver project also depends on what happens beneath the surface.
In the Quad Cities, seasonal temperature changes and freeze-thaw cycles make proper preparation especially important. Excavation, base preparation, drainage, edge restraint, and installation all contribute to the long-term performance of a paver walkway or patio.
That’s one reason we approach hardscaping as part of the complete landscape rather than treating the pavers as an isolated feature. Drainage, grading, planting beds, steps, retaining features, and surrounding outdoor spaces all need to work together.
Custom Pavers Aren’t Just for Front Walkways
The same design principles can be used throughout a property.
Custom pavers can create a garden path through the landscape, connect different outdoor living areas, define a backyard patio, surround a fire feature, or provide an inviting transition from the house to an outdoor kitchen or entertaining area.
Using complementary materials throughout the property can also help separate outdoor spaces while maintaining a consistent overall design.
If you’re considering a larger hardscape project, explore our landscaping pavers, walkways, and patios to see more ways Outdoor Innovations can incorporate pavers into your landscape.
Start Planning Your Custom Paver Project
The best paver projects balance beauty, function, and long-term performance. From the shape of a walkway to the smallest border detail, thoughtful planning can turn an ordinary hardscape into a defining feature of your home.
Outdoor Innovations designs and builds custom walkways, patios, and complete outdoor living spaces for homeowners throughout the Quad Cities, Eastern Iowa, and Western Illinois.
When You Want the Best: Poolscaping Project Feature
An Outdoor Innovations Standout and Extraordinary Pool Area Transformation
Designing the perfect backyard isn’t just about installing a swimming pool—it’s about creating an outdoor living space where family and friends naturally gather. Thoughtful poolscaping combines landscaping, hardscaping, lighting, outdoor kitchens, shade structures, and custom features into one cohesive design.
One of our favorite Outdoor Innovations projects transformed an existing backyard pool into a complete outdoor entertainment destination. Here’s a closer look at the design elements that turned an ordinary pool area into an extraordinary outdoor retreat.
What is Poolscaping?
Poolscaping refers to the art and science of designing and enhancing the area around a pool to create a cohesive, aesthetically pleasing, and functional outdoor space. It involves elements such as landscaping, hardscaping, lighting, and amenities that complement the pool, providing both beauty and utility. Effective poolscaping not only enhances the visual appeal but also maximizes the usability and enjoyment of the pool area. This poolscaping project is special, as it shows so much of what can be done to enhance your pool area.
A Complete Outdoor Makeover
The centerpiece of this project was an existing pool, which we preserved while completely transforming the surrounding area. Our goal was to create a seamless blend of relaxation, entertainment, and aesthetic appeal.
Shade and Comfort: The Pavilion
To provide ample shade, we installed a stunning 16 x 20 traditional pavilion from Country Lane, featuring upgraded posts for added elegance and stability. Under this pavilion, we constructed two bar-height islands using High Format Belvedere materials with luxurious limestone countertops. These islands are perfect for family and friends to gather, watch TV, or enjoy the pool view.
Entertainment and Convenience
We enhanced the entertainment value with a 14 ft. counter-height serving island, equipped with two Coyote refrigerators and a TV wall. This setup ensures that refreshments and entertainment are always at hand.
Recreation and Relaxation
Every great pool area should include spaces for both activity and relaxation. For this project we added:
Decorative LED-lit trees that create evening ambiance
Artificial turf for yard games and low-maintenance recreation
Custom grilling island featuring a Coyote 36-inch grill
Convenient access doors for storage
Functional Beauty: Landscaping and Hardscaping
The project features High Format outcropping with two-tiered walls, steps, and stepping stones leading to the gate. A Warming Trends gas fire pit adds warmth and a cozy atmosphere for cooler nights. We also installed steps and steppers from the garage to the new patio area, ensuring easy access for friends and family.
The new patio, crafted from elegant Travertine, offers a durable and beautiful surface. LED lighting throughout the outdoor living area enhances safety and highlights key features.
Natural Elements and Easy Maintenance
Rock features, including three columnar limestone rocks, and a low High Format Kodah wall around the pool equipment and steps, add natural beauty and cohesion to the design. To ensure easy maintenance, we replaced all the grass inside the fence with river rock, new bushes, and additional rock features.
Rather than adding outdoor features one at a time, this project was designed as a complete outdoor living environment. Each feature complements the others to improve comfort, functionality, and long-term enjoyment.
Some of the key design principles include:
Creating multiple gathering spaces instead of a single seating area
Incorporating shade for comfortable daytime use
Extending usability into the evening with landscape lighting
Using natural stone and quality materials for durability
Reducing maintenance with artificial turf and decorative rock landscaping
Frequently Asked Questions About Poolscaping
What is poolscaping?
Poolscaping is the design of the entire area surrounding a swimming pool, including patios, landscaping, outdoor kitchens, lighting, fire features, shade structures, walkways, and other amenities that improve both appearance and functionality.
How can I make my pool area more functional?
Adding features like covered seating, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, landscape lighting, and multiple gathering spaces helps transform a pool area into an outdoor living destination that can be enjoyed throughout the day and into the evening.
What materials are best for pool patios?
Natural stone, travertine, concrete pavers, and decorative concrete are all popular choices. The best option depends on your design goals, maintenance preferences, and budget.
Is landscape lighting worth adding around a pool?
Yes. Outdoor lighting improves safety around walkways and steps while also highlighting landscaping and extending the enjoyment of your backyard after sunset.
Can an existing pool be completely transformed?
Absolutely. Many backyard renovations focus on enhancing the area around an existing pool with new patios, shade structures, outdoor kitchens, landscaping, lighting, and entertainment spaces rather than replacing the pool itself.
The Final Touch
Upon completion, this poolscaping project produced a stunning, functional space perfect for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors. From the pavilion and bar islands to the artificial turf and grilling island, every element was designed and installed with meticulous attention to detail.
